Most of these notations come from the Notations 21 project. Can you tell what instruments are to be played? What notes are high or low? Loud or soft? Long or short? What is the character- angry, chaotic, peaceful, random?
For the first day of music class this term, each class was challenged to improvise/compose on the spot as a group. Students were given prompts for each, but couldn't communicate or see each other while they played, forcing everyone to listen and work together as a group. Check them out!
Bonus Track: Period 2 was having such a good time that they made another one... A: Dancy/hype music. B: Sleepy, boring music. A: Dancy/hype music. End by "playing one key."
Students were asked to find an instrument, sit facing outward in a circle (so they can't see each other or communicate verbally), and find a sound that they liked. THEN... we improvised/composed on the fly! Prompt 1: A) Play notes with gaps/spaces between them B) Play notes with no gaps between them or layered on top of each other C) slowly die out by creating larger and larger gaps between notes. Prompt 2: A) Play notes in a steady beat/pulse as an ensemble B) Play notes with no common beat/pulse C) Return to a steady ensemble beat/pulse.
